Exploring Duality

As an extension of my study around persona, or the fact that it is possible to have both a public and a private face, my photographic inquiry goes on to explore the notion of duality within the human condition.

In my two series Doll Series 4 and 5 (see photographs at the bottom of page), I have chosen to investigate the concept of duality through the mirrored image of the doll.

In Doll Series 4 the doll is shown along with its mirror image, resulting in a companionable duality - the presence of an alter ego.

Doll Series 5 continues to explore the notion of duality. I have chosen to expose structural elements of the doll, and the imperfections brought about by the ravages of time, echoed by the likeness in the mirror.

What is a persona? Meaning ‘mask’, the word ‘persona’ is defined as “the outer personality, façade, or public identity an individual presents to others”. It is my premise that for most people, a persona is necessary to function in society, so that we interact harmoniously and share our inner thoughts and emotions only with those that are close to us.
Dolls are made as replicas of people. However, I believe they portray humans in an overly romantic and idealistic way. The doll’s face is really only a façade, therefore a persona, similar to a mask.
I have explored this notion photographically. In this work I have chosen to use my own childhood doll as a symbol and metaphor both for myself, and the human condition in general. In Doll Series 1, 2 and 3, it is was my intention to provide a glimpse beneath the persona, looking for a more complex reading of the doll. In these series of photographs, I have attempted to capture three quite different aspects, or possible personalities, of the doll.
